Meet the York-Adams League's 2023-24 bowling all-stars

The York Dispatch has compiled boys' and girls' all-star teams and selected Bowlers of the Year after a memorable winter season.

As Spring Grove and York Tech battled in the final match of the York-Adams League’s 2023-24 bowling season on Feb. 9, friends and family filled the back tables at Suburban Bowlerama. They scattered soft applause as the varsity teams went back and forth over three games in two-and-a-half hours.

All eyes were on Lanes 27 and 28 at the 30-lane facility. The JV matches were on Lanes 29 and 30, with additional bowlers from both teams filling four more lanes to the left. The Friday afternoon match began before the building opened to the public, so teams and fans entered on the side. Then the drama began.

York Tech’s 4-1 team victory over Spring Grove that afternoon — the Spartans won two of three games and gained two points for outscoring the Rockets overall — handed Dallastown the outright Y-A title at the end of a hypercompetitive season. The Wildcats had completed a 12-2 league campaign a week earlier. York Tech beat Spring Grove twice in three days to bring both teams to 11-3. Central York was close behind at 9-5.

That quartet helped make the York-Adams League one of the strongest conferences in all of Pennsylvania in 2023-24. All four teams averaged more than 1,000 points per game, meaning their average bowler surpassed 200. Central York’s fourth-place finish came despite a blistering 1,056 average; Dallastown followed at 1,053, while York Tech averaged 1,014 to Spring Grove’s 1,010. (Fifth-place Kennard-Dale averaged 942 as the Rams finished ahead of Eastern York, New Oxford and Red Lion.)

Then came the postseason, when the league’s top individual stars shined bright. Central York’s Kamryn Brenneman claimed the PIAA District 3 girls’ title. Twenty Y-A bowlers — 16 boys and four girls — competed in the Eastern PA Regionals in early March, with five qualifying for the state tournament two weeks later. Dallastown’s Codie Tempe placed fourth at states to close the local season.

For their success all season long, The York Dispatch has recognized Tempe and Brenneman as its York-Adams League boys’ and girls’ Bowlers of the Year.

Striking standouts: Tempe’s fourth-place showing at states capped an unforgettable winter that nearly spoiled before it began. The senior tore his ACL during Dallastown’s soccer season and bowled the entire campaign with a brace on his right leg. He had surgery the week after states.

The injury didn’t slow him down in the slightest.

Tempe averaged 225.28 pins across 40 regular-season games, including the league’s only 300 of the season. He scored 1,043 in five games at districts, then upped his tally to 1,140 and qualified fourth in a regional field of 143. After bowing out in the regional quarterfinals, Tempe scored 1,312 in six games at states to earn the No. 5 seed in the stepladder bracket. He defeated Conwell-Egan’s Matt Coppola, 201-168, before losing 190-171 in the quarterfinals to Archbishop Ryan’s Joseph McNally, the eventual state champion.

Brenneman, also a senior, averaged 203.8 pins during the regular season, then rolled eight consecutive games above 200 (three in bracket play) to capture the District 3 girls’ title. Brenneman — who as a sophomore helped Central York capture a state team title — closed her career with a five-game score of 1,009 at regionals, placing 14th and narrowly missing the 12-bowler cutoff for state qualification.

In addition to the boys’ and girls’ Bowlers of the Year, The Dispatch has compiled boys’ and girls’ all-star first and second teams for the 2023-24 season. The rosters were determined by bowlers’ regular-season varsity averages, although full-season averages are also noted.

First team all-stars Ian Smith of Spring Grove and Noah Shultz of Central York joined Tempe at the state tournament, while Central’s Clay Thomas posted the league’s highest regular-season average (225.86) and placed fifth at districts.

The boys’ list was incredibly tough to crack, as 15 York-Adams bowlers averaged north of 200 pins during the regular season and another six — including three from Spring Grove — were in the 190s. Ten seniors and six juniors comprised the league’s roster of regional qualifiers.

Brenneman, York Tech’s Aaliyah Hall and Red Lion’s Kailynn Jones separated themselves from the girls’ pack, with Hall and Jones both qualifying for states. Behind them, a young crop of all-stars could be poised for big things in the near future.
