York College women's basketball sophomore Breana Grim was named MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, and the Eastern York graduate also made the all-conference second team alongside York Suburban's Alyssa Hocker.

Both Spartans were recognized after helping lead York to a 15-11 record this season, which included a trip to the MACC semifinals.

York College's Breana Grim (21) drives to the basket against Susquehanna on Nov. 27, 2023. The Eastern York graduate was named MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year on Tuesday.

Grim joined the Spartans in 2023 after initially abandoning basketball in college and enrolling at Penn State as a regular student. The former Eastern York standout wasted little time making an impact, earning MACC Player of the Week at the very beginning of the season and adding multiple weekly honors throughout the winter. Grim averaged 12.3 points, 4.6 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals for the Spartans this season; she reached double figures 16 times in her 24 contests.

Grim became York College's fifth conference Rookie of the Year in history and first since Kristen Haley in 2010-11, when the Spartans were in the Capital Athletic Conference.

"Bree made an immediate impact on our team this year," Spartans head coach Betsy Witman said in a press release. "She is an all-around player who makes her teammates better. The great thing is I think she can keep getting better. I can't wait to see what she will be able to do next year."

Hocker enjoyed a breakout season for York after her college career began with a canceled campaign in 2020-21 and she spent two seasons in a reserve role. The senior forward started all 26 games this season and averaged 11.5 points and 9.3 rebounds, an impressive number at just 5-foot-8. Hocker has already revealed her plan to use her fifth season of eligibility and return for a fourth year on the court.

"Alyssa works incredibly hard and that work was evident this year," Witman said. "She made herself into a key part of what we did and was a critical part of our success this year. I am thrilled that she is coming back next year for her fifth year."

Messiah senior Morgan Adams, a New Oxford graduate, was named to the MAC All-Commonwealth first team on Tuesday. The 6-2 forward leads the Falcons (22-5) with 16.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Messiah earned the top seed in the conference tournament but fell at home to Widener in Saturday's championship game. The Falcons earned an at-large NCAA Division III Tournament berth on Monday, drawing a first-round matchup against Shenandoah in a pod hosted by Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

York College will return to the floor in 2024-25, and the Spartans are in line to return six of seven primary rotation players from this past season. Spring Grove graduate Brooklyn Naylor, who started 24 games this year, is one of only two players out of eligibility for the Spartans.
