Local roundup: Penn State York men's basketball reaches PSUAC title game

Staff Report
York Dispatch

The Penn State York men's basketball team will play for a conference championship in State College on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions overcame a slim halftime deficit to defeat Penn State DuBois, 77-69, in the PSUAC semifinals at home Wednesday night. PSY will face Penn State Greater Allegheny for the tournament title at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Bryce Jordan Center.

York High graduate Marquise McClean led all scorers with 26 points, while teammate Deriq Brown (New Oxford) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The local Lions (26-6) trailed 39-37 at intermission but pulled ahead in the second half and ultimately avenged a December road loss to DuBois.

Penn State York won the 2022 conference title but was disqualified from the 2023 field after being discovered to have had an ineligible player on its roster. A victory Saturday against Greater Allegheny would give PSY tournament titles in consecutive appearances, as well as an automatic berth in the USCAA Division II championships in March.

Women's semifinals — Penn State Beaver 65, Penn State York 57: The York women led this one 39-37 through three quarters but couldn't hold off the PSUAC West champions in the final frame. Penn State York (19-11) will now wait to learn whether or not it will continue its season in the USCAA tournament.

Freshman Abigail McAlexander (Northeastern) led the PSY offense for the second straight contest, scoring 16 points after tallying 20 in Monday's quarterfinal home victory. Teammate Brooke Shutter had 12 points and nine rebounds.
